The Institute of FOCUS – Emotional Wellness & Professional Success
Self-Administered Wellness and Focus Therapy
Over several decades of learning, training, coaching, and consulting my experience has shown me that living a high-quality life is all about “YOUR FOCUS.” In other words, what you give your attention to.
Through coaching and consulting as well as my personal life, I’ve observed that most people do not choose what they give their attention to. My observation is, most just look where someone else tells them to or just move around looking at and reacting to everything in their surroundings.
So, what is focus?
Focus is the ability to identify a person. place, thing, or condition and choose whether or not to give it your attention. Focus can feel good or bad. It can be productive or unproductive. What it always is – is a choice.
Ex. You didn’t choose for your boss to treat you poorly. However, when you spend the rest of the day or week being angry and upset, telling others and remembering it over and over again, that was your choice. You could have dismissed it as him or her having a bad day and spent the rest of your day or week focusing on things you like.
As much as we like to give credit to everything and everyone else for how we feel from moment to moment, we decide in every moment what we will focus on and therefore how we feel.
Focus takes skill
Growing up most of us were taught by the adults around us to focus on problems. We were taught by example to become upset and even angry if you experience something you believe is not good. In fact, even in school we were taught to take care of our body, so it will feel and function good. Unfortunately, we were not taught to take care of our minds so we can feel good emotionally throughout our life.
To strengthen our body we eat well, and exercise. That message is everywhere in society. For your mind however, society and the status quo offer drugs and therapists. Those solutions are economically beneficial to certain segments of our society. Unfortunately, neither drugs nor therapy can make you emotionally stable, instead they make you emotionally dependent on them.
We can strengthen our bodies through nourishment and exercise. We can even target desired areas of our body with specific activities to create desired results. Fortunately, we can do the same for our mind. We are not at the mercy of our mind but rather our emotional wellbeing is based on our focus, just like your body is. No maintenance for our body results in weakness and poor health. No maintenance for our mind bears like results.
Focus in action
We can build an amazingly capable body through the proper diet and exercise, and we can do the same for our mind. For the body we choose activities directed at the results we seek, whether larger biceps, more stamina, a larger rear, whatever we’re looking to achieve. For the mind, it’s activities that develop and strengthen our ability to choose and maintain our focus.
These mind development activities exercise and build focus and control. We gain the ability to selectively focus only on what feels good to us individually. As a result, we no longer have a button to push, a switch to flip, or a goat to get. Instead of feeling anxious and on edge we continually generate and maintain mental ease, peace, and happiness, for ourselves. Things that used to “Set you off,” you laugh off easily. Your mind becomes your tool to select the life experiences you desire to participate in. You are no longer at the mercy of others.
Like the body builder gets physically stronger where they focus their efforts, with mind maintenance and its focus building activities our mind strengthens in our ability choose our thoughts and feelings. At the very least you learn to be emotionally stable and satisfied throughout your life. In time, we can achieve a focus that will bring us continued happiness and all the life experiences you desire.
We’ve all heard “The mind is a powerful thing.” That is an understatement! By acquiring the ability to powerfully focus and maintain our emotional stability, we can create an amazing life for ourselves based on what WE want to live.
Mind maintenance activities
So, what are these activities? In essence, they are a group of activities that first teach you how to identify the toxic beliefs you hold. (“Toxic Belief,” A habit of accepted thought that negatively impacts the universal wellbeing, positive outcomes, and individual freedoms of any individual.)
Secondly, they show you how to disengage from those toxic beliefs and choose personally beneficial beliefs to focus on instead. Next, they show you how to selectively choose and focus on thoughts and conditions that feel good to you consistently creating a waking state of ease, peace, satisfaction, and happiness.
It’s self-administered focus therapy. You, at your pace, focus your mind on your desired life outcomes and experiences. Best of all, you learn how to feel good all the time no matter what the conditions around you are. You gain control of your focus and life experience. No outside substances needed!
Where do I get this group of activities?
